How to Get Over Your Fear of Your Boss

How to Get Over Your Fear of Your BossHow to Get Over Your Fear of Your BossFor each of the eager beavers out tzu siche who seize upon any opportunity to remind the higzu sich-ups of their existence, there are handfuls of fearful employees doing whatever they can to avoid unwanted attention or judgement from management. If you fall in this category, youve probably mastered the art of always appearing busy as a mechanism to avoid conversation, memorized your babo schedule so you can avoid run-ins, and learned the straight-and-narrow approach to completing tasks in a way that doesnt raise eyebrows or warrant the most dreaded experience of all being called into the boss office. Why are so many of us fearful of our employers? Is the modern workplace really dominated by Machiavellian tyrants? Probably not. Data shows that any given boss personality might be irrelevant to these anxieties. In fact, as many as one in four people fear being yelled at by their superior, regardless of his or he r past behavior. But unfortunately, the fear is real. Its uncomfortable, and it often hinders the creative risk-taking that can help both you and your employer get ahead. So, what can you do to overcome your fears and reach your full potential? Here are a few ideas.Realize Its Not All About YouA client once told me that, for years, she would agonize every time she rambled in a meeting or misspoke on a conference call. After meeting her husband, the CEO of a telecommunications firm, she realized that the problem was universal. He would come home from work worrying about a comment he made to an investor or whether hed misjudged a big decision. His fears were never about his employees minor screw-ups- they were about his bosses. Think about it You arent losing sleep over the mistakes the intern made today, are you? Its the same way with your boss. He or she is often more focused on big projects than on your missteps. See Things as They Truly AreYou cant change that which you dont ackno wledge. For this reason, its crucial that you check in and pay attention to your fear-based thoughts. Be honest with yourself Is the fear that you feel toward your boss based on some other work or life experience deep in your past? Is it really about this particular person? In many cases, this fear has little to do with your boss. For example, a client recently told me that her biggest workplace fear is getting fired. This fear influenced many of her interactions in the workplace, particularly by deterring her from speaking up when there was an issue that demanded a conversation with her supervisor. There was an occasion where I was being bullied by a colleague, she explained to me, and as much as I knew it should be addressed, I ultimately decided to keep it to myself due to my extreme fear of being fired. After speaking further, the true source of her fear became obvious Her father was laid off during the recession, and her parents divorced shortly thereafter. I watched tears fall down as she spoke of a time when her father lost his job, and the stress was seemingly a catalyst for her parents eventual divorce. Who wouldnt carry this fear on after that? And thats exactly why its so important that we get to the root of it. One creative way to do this is through writing. Make a list of your fears and what they might be telling you. Give them a voice. Youll likely learn a lot- and maybe even find that they arent so scary after all. Humanize Your BossFor most of us, there will be times when the boss is unpleasant or treats us with less respect than we feel we deserve. In some of those cases, her reaction will be warranted, but more often than not, her behavior will be the side effect of something else in her life. More than anything, its important to realize that almost nothing in the workplace is truly personal. Ask yourself if your boss treatment toward you is a pattern youve seen in his or her behavior elsewhere. By examining where you see it also showing up, y oull realize that its not really about you. I also recommend reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, which has some great practical exercises to help you not take things personally. If youve done that, and you really do feel like your boss might have it out for you, address it so that your boss has an opportunity to check in with you. For example Ive gotten the impression that theres perhaps something that I can do to be a stronger employee. Can we set up a meeting to discuss how I could better serve you? This is a huge (and scary) step, but it holds fruitful results.Be IrreplaceablePerhaps the best way to overcome your fear of your boss is to build a closer relationship with him or her- to get to the point where you know that youre irreplaceable. This doesnt have to come through conversation in fact, its better to do so through action. And this doesnt necessarily mean staying in the office late or working weekends. Great employees pay attention to their boss priorities and pain points, and they constantly offer to take on side projects- projects that the boss may not have initially thought about- to improve a process or ease the workload. How? In order to come up with projects that truly make his or her heart sing, you must anticipate circumstances or projects that may present challenges in the near future. What are your boss goals, priorities, and- most importantly- problems? Your ability to identify mitigate issues before they arise is key to becoming an irreplaceable employee. The more you know that youre needed (and wanted), the more that the fear will subside. Create a Professional IdentityWe are conditioned from a young age to seek acceptance from our peers. I call this the social self, our natural default drumherum that is driven by the desire to be liked. On the other side of this desire is the fear of not being liked. For this reason, its critical that we create a professional persona as we evolve in our careers. The ability to draw a distinc tion between who you are in your social life- your social self- and who you are in your professional life enables you to departmentalize your fears.Take some time to envision who you want to be in your professional life and commit to honoring that vision. This might feel inauthentic because it requires you to reprogram those long-standing default settings, but there is nothing more powerful and authentic than creation. Once you have determined who you want to be professionally, assess other aspects of your work life that may also have to change. For example, if your professional self is committed to no longer being late for your standing morning meeting, its crucial that you start setting your alarm clock. Whether your fear is in response to criticism or in anticipation of it, being scared of your boss is incredibly detrimental to your wertmiger zuwachs in the workplace. The only way to get past this fear is to get clear on the root of it awareness is a powerful mechanism that spark s change. Your fear serves as an invitation for personal growth. Learning to identify will help you move past your insecurities so that you can focus fully on what matters to your employer and to your own professional evolution. Company Tested 4-Day Work Week, Results Were Overwhelmingly Positive

Company Tested 4-Day Work Week, Results Were Overwhelmingly PositiveCompany Tested 4-Day Work Week, Results Were Overwhelmingly Positive New Zealands Perpetual Guardian is not some kind of a crazy startup. On the contrary.Theyre one of New Zealands biggest trust businesses. Whats more, their heritage dates all the way back to the end of the 19th century. As far as being conservative goes, theyre basically the definition of it.Which is why nobody expected them to come up with something crazy. Especially not something crazy AND cool like a 4 day work week. But as it turns out, they knew exactly what they were doing.During a six-week trial period, reported stress levels lowered from 45% to 38% and work life balance improved from 54% to 78%.All of that while maintaining their pre-trial productivity levels.Disconnecting productivity from hours in the workplace.I wanted to disconnect productivity from hours in the office, writes Andrews Barnes, the CEO of Perpetual Guardian, in his LinkedIn post.I wanted them to only come to work four days of the week but I would still pay them for five. With no extra hours worked on their four days. he adds.It all started over the Christmas. Barnes had read a couple of research reports which suggested that productivity in the workforce can be as low as one and a half hours a day.Although these numbers are nothing new, theyre in no way less shocking because of it.But if Barnes experiment is anything to go by, 4 day work week could be the answer.Five days of work squeezed into a 4 day work week.Barnes invited academics into the office to observe the trial to enaya that reduced hours wouldnt overburden staff. Naturally, he also wanted to make sure it wouldnt lead to reduced output. But even to his own surprise, there was no drop in productivity. In other words, employee productivity rose by 20% for the number of hours worked.Even better, the researchers saw an increase in staff satisfaction and engagement. It also led to a desire to keep working with the company longer. The stress levels went down from 45% to 38%, while work life balance increased from 54% to 78%.Now its up to the companys board to review all the feedback and decide about continuing the four day week as a permanent offer to their staff. So stay tunedOh, and if youd like to learn a bit more about business benefits of flexible working arrangements, heres a really good article by NZ Herald about it.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

5 Tips to Be a More Confident Job Seeker

5 Tips to Be a More Confident Job Seeker5 Tips to Be a More Confident Job SeekerIf theres one common thread that sticks with you through the entirety of your job search, its probably this nerves.A dry mouth, sweaty palms, and shaky knees- theyre likely as much job hunt staples as your resume and your cover letter. Whether youre waiting anxiously to head into that big interview or compulsively refreshing your inbox for any news about that open position, those butterflies in your stomach are ever-present when youre looking for a new gig.Rest askoranversd, nerves are normal. But, if you can help it, you want to keep those butterflies at bay and present yourself as poised and polished to profil employers- rather than panicked.Think its impossible? The good news is, its not. Here are five key tips to be a more confident job landseeker (whether you actually feel that way or not)1. Know what you want.Confidence in your job search starts well before you ever shake hands with a hiring manager. In fact, developing that self-assuredness begins before you even submit your first application. Before you even so much as quantify your resume bullets, take some time to nail down exactly what youre looking for in your next career move. Do you want more flexibility? To move into a leadership position? A total career change? What types of things do you want to be responsible for? What are you looking for in regards to company culture?By zoning in on exactly what you want, youll be far more confident as you peruse open positions- youll know exactly when youve found something that fits the bill. Remember, as much as that employer is looking for a good fit, you need to find the right fit for yourself as well.2. Understand your qualifications.Nothing gives you a bigger confidence boost than knowing exactly what you bring to the table. With that in mind, sit down and list out your key skills and qualities that any employer would see value in.Of course, youll need to tailor your individua l applications and resumes depending on specific jobs and what they require. However, thinking through your core competencies and developing your own personal value proposition will remind you of the fact that youre a qualified and competent job seeker.Thats just the confidence-boosting foundation you want to lay when youre getting started on your hunt for a new role.3. Enlist help.Sometimes, despite your very best efforts, its tough to muster up that confidence within yourself. In those moments, getting some help from others can build you back up again. For example, have a close friend read through your resume and cover letter before you submit it. If he says it looks great, youll feel a little more self-assured. If he finds something that needs fixing, that helps you too, as you can make the tweak and then know that youre turning in your very best materials. So, in those moments when youre feeling low, dont hesitate to lean on your network. You dont need to job search in a vacuum4. Focus on preparation.Even if you put all of the above tips to work, nothing will undermine your job search confidence faster than flying by the seat of your pants. When youre already nervous, needing to wing it is a surefire way to take a nosedive. Before you participate in a phone screening or an interview, make sure youve researched the company (and your interviewer) and have a solid grasp on what that job entails. Prepare some questions you want to ask so you can end the conversation by proving that youre highly engaged in the hiring process.Getting your ducks in a row will take a little more time. But, youd rather be over-prepared than under-prepared- and, quite frankly, its a step you cant afford to skip.5. Imagine worst-case scenarios. At first glance, this tip might seem disheartening. However, when were in the thick of a job search, its easy for us to blow things out of proportion. Bombing an interview or getting a dreaded rejection letter will surely lead to an Independence D ay-style catastrophe. When you feel yourself beginning to get extra anxious, ask yourself this question Whats the worst that can happen? In most cases, the worst-case scenario is that you wont land the job- and, while thats a blow to your ego, it really means that youre no worse off than you were before. Step back and give yourself some perspective every now and then. Things arent as do or passiv as they might seem, and recognizing that will give you some added self-assuredness as you continue to tackle your job hunt. You want to be a poised and positive job seeker. But, unfortunately, thats often easier said than done. Put these five tips to work, and youre sure to approach those applications and interviews with an extra dose of confidence. 11 tips to help you move on from a job rejection

11 tips to help you move on from a job rejection11 tips to help you move on from a job rejectionIts hard not to takejob rejections, like any other form of rejection, personally. But separating yourself from the situation is the key to moving on after a job rejection says Erica Keswin, workplace strategistand author of Bring Your Human to Work. Hiring managers must look through numerous candidates at a time - assuming your rsummakes it to a human in the first place- so the tendency is to be curt when rejecting applicants. While Keswin says companies should be as respectful to candidates asinterviewees are expected to be, she recommends you dont dwell too much on a rejection.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThe idea of honoring relationships starts with people who dont even work there yet, Keswin says. When it comes to some of these recruiters, theres no excuse in how they are treat ing people, but try to keep it at arms length.Yet even with more personalized rejection notes, the sting can be painful and lead to insecurity, says Lynn Taylor, workplace expert and author of Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job.Its one of the most disheartening things, especially when you think not only about the time and effort that goes into applying but how much emotion youve invested in the job, Lynn Taylor said. While talking about being rejected can be embarrassing, there are steps job seekers can take to make the most of a door closed. Here are Taylor and Kerwins best tips on getting over a job rejection. When you first get a rejection emaille, take a step back and a moment to congratulate yourself for making it this farThe time immediately after getting a rejection letter can be disheartening, Taylor says, especially if its one you have been interviewing for. If you made it through several rounds, take the initial momen ts to congratulate yourself for scoring the interview in the first place, and then take a step back from your computer to go outside or distract yourself.Rushing to crank out the next cover letter right after getting rejected can also be counterproductive, as you should wait until you are in a more positive mindset to get back into applying. The best way to move on is to just realize that you only need one job, and this is one of many job interview situations that are there for you, Taylor says.Remember that if the company did not want to hire you, you probably would not have wanted to work for them anyway.Often times when applicants submit their rsums, they go into a big black hole, never to be heard from again. If a company did not send you a personalized rejection letter, or otherwise made you feel like they did not value your time, Keswin says there is a good gunst der stunde you would not have felt welcome once you got to the company. All of those things speak to company values an d how they treat their people, she says. I would look in the mirror and say Is that a really company I would be happy at?Set up social events with close family and friends, and reach out to mentorsFor those feeling particularly stung, Taylor recommends reaching out to friends or family in your inner circle who can remind you of the bigger picture. Before you hop back into the job hunt, use the first couple of days to build up your self confidence. Reaching out to mentors for feedback or support can also be helpful, Taylor adds.Be sure to thank your interviewer the day you get a rejectionSend a thank-you email the day you get a rejection letter, as even a day later a hiring manager could be on to the next 12 candidates, Keswin says.If you moved onto the interview phase, Keswin recommends reaching out to not just your recruiter, but the specific people who interviewed you, and thank them for taking the time to meet with you.You had a different type of connection with all of these diff erent people, Keswin says. You should try to make a personal connection in that email and say you hope to keep in touch. If you particularly enjoyed interviewing for the company, ask your interviewer to keep you in mind for future positionsA rejection letter doesnt have to close all doors Especially if its a company you really thought you were interested in, you always want to leave things in a positive way to leave the door open, Keswin says.Sometimes, when a new manager comes in and needs to hire, companies keep a record of former applicants they liked so they can fill open positions. Other times, companies will reject applicants for a full-time position, but offer them contractual work, Taylor says. Maintaining a connection with your interviewer could lead to a job down the line. You can ask for feedback on why the hiring manager didnt go forward- but be cautiousThe best way to know why you didnt get a job is to ask, Keswin says. As you send a thank-you note to interviewers, she s uggests saying sorry it didnt work out, but if they had any specific feedback, you would love to hear it.Taylor, however, says that this approach could backfire. Managers often dont have time to give detailed feedback to each rejected candidate, and asking them to take time out of their day for you could feel burdensome. Theres a 60/40 chance youre irritating them more than anything else, Taylor says.If you received a few rejections in a row, take the time to analyze what could be missing in your resumeMany times people apply to several jobs during the interview stage. If multiple of your applications come out unsuccessful, you might need to examine your skills more critically, Keswin says.I would urge people to really be honest with themselves to do a post-mortem analysis on what the issue was, she adds. The first step is to figure out whether your rejections stem from missing skills or not being a culture fit. In the case of skills, it could be as simple as taking an online class a nd learning something new for your rsum.If you have the means, hiring a career coach could help you figure out what isnt workingIf the reasons why you got rejected were because of not being a cultural fit, or if they were unclear, seeking professional help could go a long way, Keswin says. As a career coach at NYU, she helped qualified candidates during the financial crisis figure out which of their skills were transferable, then she targeted jobs that could use those skills.A career coach helpedBusiness Insider reporter Shana Lebowitzfeel more empowered, and she learned how to make a roadmap to reach her goals. Career coaches can be expensive, however, so Keswin also recommends reaching out to university alumni networks first to get the saatkorn type of support without paying a fee. When you get back into job searching, try being more flexible with what youd consider applying toIf at first, you were uncomfortable relocating or transferring your skills to other industries, the time f ollowing a rejection could be a chance to widen your horizons, Taylor says.Especially if youre willing to be flexible on the exact job description, widen your scope just a little bit, she says. That may help your mindset. If youre currently employed, taking on another project at work could bulk up your rsumTaking on a new job could mean sacrificing the flexibility you earned through years of working at your current job, Keswin says. One way to get over a rejection is to focus on what you have, rather than what you dont. You can also build skills for when you do try to seek greener pastures Take on a new project at your current job, or focus on growing your side hustle. If you realize the job search may be taking longer than youd like, ask what are some positives you can focus on in other aspects of your life, Keswin says. After you build up your skills, dont be afraid to try again at your dream companyIf a hiring manager tells you that you were a good candidate, but they found a rock st ar, and they offer to keep in touch, dont take that information lightly, Keswin says. If you can figure out the skills you may be missing, you could try reaching out to similar positions at the company down the road. It shows youre really interested in the company, she says. This article first appeared on Business Insider. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Candidate Experience Roundup - July 2015

Still, an emphasis on utilizing messaging and online assessment functionality is important to ensure that the candidates entering the pipeline are the right ones.Monster Is the objective to engage as many people as possible? Or is it possible to be more selective in attracting specific skills?CKR Its a bit of a mix of both - for the fruchtwein part the objective is to identify how to get in front of a very specific prospect. However, its also important to maintain a strong employer brand, especially in the social realm where many aim to engage as many people as possible, as your connections there may very well lead to future candidates and/o r customers.MonsterCan innovative multimedia marketing be done effectively, without breaking the bank?CKR An example of a low-cost multimedia campaign we conducted for ourselves is our agency anniversary campaign, which won Grand Prize for Self Promotion at this years CEAs.As CKRs anniversary falls on April 1st, we decided to launch an April Fools Day campaign promoting several fake (and hilarious if we do say so ourselves) products promising to help employers to retain and even clone their top talent via three topics Cloner, Deployeeand reTension.Utilizing online marketing tactics including video, landing pages, pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns, social media, schmelzglas campaigns, sales sheets and PR, we were able to stir up a lot of buzz and traffic to our site without breaking the bank.In fact, our social shared when up 300%, our Facebook fan base grew to more than those of our top competitors combined, and we saw a huge increase in site traffic - about a 55% increase from the nor m And this is all from a campaign that ran for less than a week.Monster How are companies using online media to build their brand?CKR Companies are now aiming to utilize online media in a comprehensive manner versus a piecemeal approach, taking into consideration placement, timing, frequency, messaging and creative used.Every single detail has an effect on the employers brand and must be taken into thoughtful consideration. Study Women financial advisors punished more harshly than men

Study Women financial advisors punished more harshly than menStudy Women financial advisors punished more harshly than menAre women punished more punitively for misdeeds at work than men? In the financial advisory industry, they are according to a new working paper from Harvard Business School on the gender punishment eu-agrarpolitik.Researchers used 10 years of data on financial advisors employment information from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), an independent nonprofit authorized by the U.S. government to monitor financial firms. The info also contained details about whether an advisor had ever committed misconduct and detailed each infraction.Men misbehave 2x as much, women 20% more likely to be firedMale advisors committed misconduct twice as often as female advisors, it was found. However, when women committed misconduct, there were bigger consequences they were 20% more likely to be fired, and 30% and to have a harder time finding employment afterward.Whil e women are punished more heavily than men for their misdeeds, their misconduct that is 20% less costly to the company women are less inclined toward repeating the misconduct. Men, on the other hand, are more serious, repeat offenders, with higher settlement costs to the firm up to $20% incurred if they are caught. The researchers attributed the unfair treatment of women advisors, and the more laissez-faire treatment towards their male counterparts, to gender bias, especially since the industry is male-dominated.Female managers make a differenceHowever, the gender punishment gap narrowed when the women financial advisors worked at companies with a greater number of females as managers or at the local branch level. This told researchers that the gender punishment gap was not dictated by certain firms or financial niches. Instead, it was a phenomenon called in-group tolerance. Simply put, people are more tolerant of those that are more like them.In the workplace, men are less likely to come down hard on men male executives seem to be more forgiving of misconduct by men relative to women, says the paper which leaves women out in the cold. But in a financial advisory workplace where there are more women managers, female bosses are less likely to respond to womens misconduct with excessive harshness.A recent Wall Street Journal story deals with the same topic on women high positions in their field and the little leeway they are given to make mistakes as opposed to men. Both the article and the above Harvard Business School working paper referred to another Harvard working paper from last year on surgeons. If a female surgeons work resulted in the death of a patient, physician referrals to her dropped 54%. If the same happened to male surgeons, however, the reaction was not nearly as harsh. The paper noted that this may be because men appear to be treated as individuals.

Military Education Benefits & Enlisted College Programs

Military Education Benefits & Enlisted College ProgramsMilitary Education Benefits & Enlisted College ProgramsThe Active Duty Montgomery G.I. Billis the same for all of the active duty services. The choice of whether or not to participate in the program is up to the recruit and is made (after a briefing) in basic training. If a recruit elects to participate, hismilitary pay is reduced by $100 per month for 12 months ($1,200 total). In return, the recruit receives education benefits. The active duty G.I. Bill Benefits can be used while on active duty, or after (honorable) discharge, but must be used within ten years of discharge. To use MGIB while on active duty, you must serve two continuous years of active duty. There are a few different scenarios for how the MGIB can be used after honorable separation from active duty. With three years of active duty, you must have served three continuous years of active duty, unless you were honorably discharged early for one of a very few specific reasons, such as medical. You only need two continuous years of active duty if you first enlisted for two years of active duty, or you have an obligation to serve four years in the Selected Reserve. You must enter the selected reservewithin one year of your release from active duty. Alternately, those with two years of active duty who werehonorably separated early for one of the very specific reasons allowed (such as medical) are also eligible. Its important to note that if you are separated early, and lose your G.I. Bill qualification, you do not get your money back. It is because, under the law, the money taken out of your pay is not considered a contribution, but rather a reduction in pay. Reserve/Guard Montgomery G.I. Bill It is the same as the Active Duty Montgomery G.I. Bill, with a few exceptions Your military pay is not reduced for this program. However, your monetary benefits are not nearly as generous as the Active Duty Program. While you must enlist for a period of si x years or more, you can begin using the benefits immediately after boot camp and technical or A-school. But benefits terminate if you dont serve your entire enlistment contract period. Even if you dont separate from the Reserves, MIGB benefits expire 14 years after the date you become eligible for the program. Active Duty Tuition Assistance All of the services offer 100 percent tuition assistance for courses taken while on active duty. However, there are limitations per year per individual. Additionally, there are limits on the amount of tuition assistance available per semester hour. Guard/Reserve Tuition Assistance Both the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard offer tuition assistance as well. Additionally, many states offeradditional education benefitsfor members of their National Guard (National Guard is controlled- for the most part- by the individual States, not the Federal Government so that benefits can vary widely from state-to-state). TheAir Force Reserv esgive 100 percent tuition assistancefor undergraduate degree programs, with some limitations an annual maximum. The Army Reserves offers 100 percent tuition assistancefor both undergraduate and graduate degrees, and theCoast Guard Reserves offer tuition assistancefor both undergraduate and graduate degrees as well. The Navy and Marine Corps Reserves do not offer a tuition assistance programs. However, for all of the reserve services, military members who are called to active get the same tuition assistance benefits as their active duty counterparts. That means, for example, that a Reserve Marine, called to active duty, would be eligible for the Marine Corps Active Duty tuition assistance program. The Community College of the Air Force The Air Force is the only service thatissues college credits and college degrees. The Air Force does this through theCommunity College of the Air Force (CCAF), which is a fully accredited community college. Itissues fully accredited college transcr ipts, and awards Associate of Science degrees to Air Force members in educational areas of their military specialties, using a combination of credits for off-duty college courses, military schools, and military experience. Getting a Degree While on Active Duty Eachmilitary basehas an Education Office, who have arranged for colleges and universities to conduct college courses on-base, leading to various degree programs. And even for those who dont work a traditional schedule, distance-learning has changed the face of getting an off-duty education. In addition to taking courses off duty, each of the services has programs which allow some enlisted to remain on active duty and attend college full-time,receiving full pay and allowances. Some of these programs lead to a commission as an officer some do not. Most require that you commit yourself for a longer hitch in the military. Most require that you obtain some college (usually two or three years) on your own, first, and all of these programs are extremely competitive. There are many more applicants for these programs than there are available slots each year. Enlisted members who do obtain a college degree while on active duty can apply for a commission throughOfficers Candidate School(Officer Training School for the Air Force). Again, there are generally many more applicants each year than there are available slots. The Army and the Coast Guard are the only services in which an enlisted member can obtain a commission without having a four-year college degree. Enlisted members of the Army can attend OCS and be commissioned with only 90 college credits. However, they must complete their degree within one year of being commissioned, or they risk being reverted (rifted) to their previous enlisted rank.
